Free Kick
2011, written at London Film Academy..
1 EXT, PARK, DAY.
The park is empty apart from RIVAAN, (9), wearing a
standard red football kit, standing statue-like, on a
football pitch, near the edge of the 18-yard penalty area.
He looks down at his left yellow Nike Tiempo football boot
with a blank expression. He kneels down onto his right
knee and begins to tie his show lace.
2 EXT, PARK, DAY.
A crowd of animated parents are shouting encouraging words
towards the pitch from the sidelines.
Rivaan has a standard size 5 football in his hand on the
edge of the 18-Yard penalty area, close to the right hand
edge of the ’D’, and is facing a wall of 5 opposing
football players, all dressed in a standard blue football
kit, 10 yards away.
There are many players scattered around the pitch. Many
are near the 18-yard penalty area. Players in red are
being marked by players in blue.
He places the ball down on the edge of the 18-Yard penalty
area with an apprehensive look on his face. He faces the
grass as he puts the ball down. He stands upright to face
the wall and takes a deep breathe to in an attempt to out
the noise coming from the sidelines. His eyes take a
moment to measure the space between the goalkeeper and the
right hand post. He takes one step back from the ball.
WHISTLE BLOWS.
He takes a step forward and kicks the ball with his left
foot. The ball floats over the wall and misses the right
hand post by an inch. A mixture of noise comes from
sidelines as his head drops to face his boots and his
hands clutch his hips.
3 EXT, PARK, DAY.
Scene cuts to Rivaan’s head facing down in the empty park
and the noise drowns out. He pulls on the hoops of the
knot he just tied in his laces and stands back upright. He
walks to the center of the ’D’ to collect a standard size
5 football. He walks back to the right hand edge of the
’D’, from where he took the free kick in the last game he
played.
He places the ball down.
The goal is open.
Rivaan has a calm facial expression. He takes a deep
breath.
Rivaan’s football boots are placed just behind the ball as
he takes a step back.
After a brief moment, Rivaan steps forward and kicks the
ball. The ball floats over where the wall was placed in
the previous game and into the top right hand corner of
the goal.
He looks around the empty park with a pleased facial
expression, looking for a witness. There is no one in
sight.
He casually jogs towards the goal to collect the ball and
walks back to place it on the penalty spot.
